Why can't the converter open a .doc file directly?
The two extensions are completely different file formats, not versions of one format. A legacy .doc file is a binary container that Microsoft used before Office 2007, and reading it reliably requires reverse-engineering decades of undocumented structures. A .docx file is Office Open XML: a ZIP archive holding XML that describes headings, lists, tables, and styles as labelled data. That labelling is exactly what makes an accurate conversion possible, because each element states what it is rather than only how it looks. Opening the older file in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, or Pages and choosing Save As .docx takes a few seconds and produces a far better result than any direct binary parser would.
